Topps Digital today released its latest line of NFT collectibles that featured Senator Bernie Sanders and his winter gloves as the theme of the promotional series.
The collectibles, known as “GPK Bernventures”, are digital packaging that contain two non-fungible tokens that are issued on the WAX blockchain. The map drawings are in the style of Topps’ long-running Garbage Pail Kids series, originally launched in 1985.
The series features 18 unique renditions of Senator Sanders’ now famous Inauguration Day pose – masked and bundled up in winter weather clothing – that the meme captures for all eternity through the immutability of blockchain technology.
In the series, Sanders is posed through a number of comical situations, such as living underwater or surviving an invasion of Mars.

After NFT packages have been “opened” by executing a transaction in the WAX blockchain, the package itself is replaced by two NFT cards that are generated randomly when opened. Cards are assigned one of five levels of increasing rarity: Base B, Base A, Sketches by Rare Artists, Epic Artist Raw Data, and Legendary Artist Signatures.
NFT holders have the option of “berning” unwanted tokens via the official website. This allows users to destroy the NFT in exchange for points that can be traded for future versions of the series.

Earlier versions of the Garbage Pail Kids series on WAX sold out in a matter of hours, and individual NFT cards regularly sell for over $ 1,000 in secondary markets.

Topps has been an American trading card and popular culture staple since the 1950s, and has done deals with Disney, Lucasfilm, Marvel, and WWE, as well as most of the major American sports leagues, over the years. It also owns a significant amount of intellectual property related to popular collectibles. According to the company’s digital division management, these traits make Topps a prime candidate for NFT collectibles growth in the mainstream perspective.

Following the success of Topps’ Garbage Pail Kid Series 1 release in May 2020, which sold 12,000 packs in 28 hours, other companies and artists took note of what WAX had to offer NFT developers.
On August 8, 2020, Joel Cry and Travis Wright, the co-hosts of the Bad Crypto podcast, launched their Blockchain Heroes collector’s series on WAX, which is made up of NFTs loosely based on personalities in the crypto industry. Later that month, Star Trek captain William Shatner launched his own line of NFTs to share memorabilia from his life and acting career. He sold all 10,000 packs in nine minutes.
More recently, EDM superstar Deadmau5 released his own NFT collectibles on WAX, a line of digital artwork under the RAREZ brand, in December 2020.
