Barcelona FC Player Gerard Piqué Invests in Ethereum-Based Fantasy Football Platform Sorare

The FC Barcelona captain has announced his official entry into the non-fungible token (NFT) industry by investing $ 4.3 million in the Sorare fantasy football platform.

The FC Barcelona player invests in the NFT Fantasy Football platform Sorare and joins as a strategic advisor

According to Sifted, Gerard Piqué participated in a seed expansion round led by the US fund Cassius Family that raised a total of $ 8.6 million for the platform, allowing users to buy and trade digital cards through NFT for professional footballers.

Additionally, according to the company’s official announcement under the agreement, the Barcelona player will join the Sorare team as a “strategic advisor”. The board members include co-founders Nicolas Julia and Adrien Montfort as well as Christain Miele.

Sorare uses Ethereum’s blockchain technology to issue digital player cards that can be used to build fantasy soccer teams or trade for real money. Almost 80 football clubs have joined the platform this year, including Porto, Zenit, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

Piqué commented on the reasons for his new business:

I see great potential in the sports games segment in a digital economy where audience attention is the most important unit of currency. I look forward to helping Sorare build their partnerships with football leagues, clubs and players around the world to create the best fantasy experience there is.

He also pointed out the need to diversify his portfolio before future retirement. Foreseeing a bright future in this type of business, he adds, “As a gamer, if you don’t start doing these things, I think there’s a big hole in which you don’t know what to do when you do leave football. ”

The future is digital football cards, says Piqué

The captain of FC Barcelona mentioned his past in trading physical football tickets and how times have changed because of the digital fantasy maps:

I’ve been a fan of soccer tickets since I was a kid. You had to buy a pack of stickers and collect all the players. As an entrepreneur, I think the world of football has to be innovative. At the end of the day it is the next step, the next generations will collect these kinds of assets and digital cards.

Sorare has reported that its sales increased over 1,000% in 2020. They project fantasy football and sports tickets to grow by $ 5.4 billion and $ 18.6 billion, respectively.

A recent survey on trends in non-fungible tokens (NFT) reported by news.Bitcoin.com found that 47% of correspondents had heard of NFT, and 63% of them had only a basic understanding of it, while 57% of them had it never used.
