Mexico’s third-richest person changes Twitter bio to include Bitcoin

Ricardo Salinas Pliego, chairman of the Grupo Salinas conglomerate and Mexico’s third richest person, is putting Bitcoin on social media.

The billionaire, with an estimated net worth of more than $ 13 billion in January, changed his Twitter bio over the weekend to include the Bitcoin hashtag (BTC). Crypto Twitter users and some of Salinas’s 840,000+ followers said they noticed the change on Saturday when the price of the crypto asset rose to over $ 40,000 for the first time in 23 days.

Speaking to Cointelegraph in December, Salinas announced that he first bought Bitcoin in 2013 for $ 200 and later sold it during the 2017 bull run when the price hit $ 17,000. He described the crypto asset as his “best investment ever”.

In November, Salinas said that 10% of its “liquid portfolio” is invested in BTC and the remainder is “in precious metal miners.” The 65-year-old billionaire, who bought in before the price of Bitcoin, hit new highs in December and January, more than doubling his investment. He has said he does not plan to sell crypto holdings for at least five years.

Salinas isn’t the only billionaire to use social media to push crypto lately. Today Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, continued his foray into the Dogecoin (DOGE) cryptocurrency. Musk has reached out to DOGE users in the past few weeks when the token was embroiled in a pump-and-dump attempt by Reddit traders and investors. The price of DOGE has increased nearly 600% in the last 30 days.
