Carolina Panthers offensive lineman Russell Okung said he was paid in Bitcoin after asking for almost two years to be paid in the cryptocurrency. Professional footballer Russell Okung reportedly receives half of his salary in bitcoin. Okung has been a staunch advocate of Bitcoin for years and has asked to be paid in Bitcoin since May 2019. Then he tweeted on Tuesday that he was “paid with Bitcoin”.
However, Okung does not get Bitcoin directly from the Panthers, but rather through a third-party payment service called Strike, an application developed by Zap Solutions Inc. that allows people to convert any percentage of their paychecks to Bitcoin.
Under the agreement, the Panthers are expected to pay part of Okung’s $ 13 million salary to Strike, who will then pay Okung in Bitcoin. Okung is the Panthers highest-paid player for the 2020 season.
Okung’s salary agreement is handled internally by the Panthers, CNBC told CNBC, adding that the National Football League (NFL) and its players union were unaware of the Okung agreement until it was announced on Tuesday. However, they have not attempted to annul the agreement or officially sign it. An NFL spokesman, Brian McCarthy, told the publication: “There was nothing to unsubscribe from.
