Xpring Releases New XRP Tools, XRPL 1.4.0 Released

Xpring, Ripple’s developer platform, expands with new tools for developers to make it easier to build on the XRP ledger (XRPL) and the Interledger protocol (ILP).

One of the first major functionalities added to the Xpring.io platform is a wallet for managing account credentials, viewing balances and monitoring transaction history – but also extending support of their software development kits for Python and Go in addition to the already supported Java, JavaScript, and Swift.

“Our goal with the Xpring SDK is to make it easy for developers to add money to their applications regardless of what platforms they’re on or what languages they prefer,” the press release states, also highlighting that the wallet is built using, and showcasing, said SDK. The wallet is launched with support for Testnet.

In what was initially launched as an investment branch of Ripple, Xpring has evolved to become a platform for developers, as Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple, recently stated in an interview:

“That [red: investments] will continue to be part of the journey. But we also realize there is an opportunity to improve some of the infrastructure and the tools, really thinking about the XRP ledger as a developer platform.”

The press release mentions that “the wallet is an important stake in the ground for Xpring and the foundation of the functionalities and features that will launch in 2020”, where we also have learned from the interview that Ripple plans to share more about going after other vertical segments.

XRPL 1.4.0 With Deletable Accounts

While developer tools are being developed by Xpring, the XRPL itself has also seen a recent update to 1.4.0, introducing a new amendment with support for deleting accounts. Unlike most blockchains, the XRPL uses a base reserve to limit the number of accounts created, and until now, once an account was activated, it was undeletable.

Even though the feature is developed and included in the update, it is only activated after a vote amongst trusted validators. If support by at least 80% is maintained continuously for two weeks, the amendment is activated.

The new DeletableAccount-feature has had a mixed reception by XRP followers, which also shows in the vote. At the time of writing, 6 of 34 validators have actively vetoed the amendment with still more than 80% in favor of enabling it.
